Being an English teacher in Colombia has many rewards and benefits. It is an exciting country full of opportunities to find work, live a good life and have a great experience.
Many people don’t consider becoming an English teacher in Colombia due to their lack of knowledge of the country and the opportunities it presents. Many teachers opt to teach English in countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, China, Japan or Dubai; these countries are considered popular places to teach English abroad. A large number of companies offer services to find individuals jobs, but these companies often take short cuts to get teachers into the countries (e.g. visa short cuts) and some companies withhold payments or even charge teachers a fee for working with them.
Being an English teacher in Colombia is a rewarding and unique experience. Colombia is a country which has been overshadowed by its past and as a result of this, tourists and teachers have refrained from visiting or moving to the country. This has changed over the past 5 years: Colombia’s improved safety has enticed many people from around the world to move to the country, and one of the most popular jobs for native English speakers is working as an English teacher in Colombia.
Working as an English teacher in Colombia is an insightful and rewarding career move, or short-term transition job, for teachers of all ages. Many of Colombia’s large number of teaching opportunities were created by expats who arrived in the country and had a desire to change the nation’s teaching customs.
Colombia’s Ministry of Education made it mandatory for all schools to implement English classes within their schools. This change in public schools in turn created a large number of English teaching jobs for Colombians and foreign teachers. This, added to the need for English teachers in Colombia within private schools and language institutions, has created a huge demand in Colombia’s cities and countryside communities.
A large number of businesses are also establishing their Latin American headquarters within Colombia, thanks to its central location and rapid development. This development has created a demand for teachers who can teach employees English as this will allow them to possibly transfer abroad or gain a promotion (a large number of these companies have links and work directly with other countries).
To start working in other countries a large amount of information is often required and the process isn’t straightforward. This often leads to people working illegally and visiting other countries in order to be able to return on a tourist visa and stay for longer. None of this happens in Colombia: it’s relatively easy for English teachers in Colombia to obtain visas when they work for a school or institution. With the correct paperwork you can get a yearlong visa, more information regarding visas can be found here.
As you can see working as an English teacher in Colombia is relatively simple and a truly rewarding experience. Colombia is a unique country with a large number of opportunities, many more than Asia or other countries offering the same things.
